Abstract
With the widespread availability of cone beam CT scanners it is important to understand what radiation dose the patient receives and how this compares with intra-oral x-rays, OPGs and medical scanners used for dental CT scans. Considerable information is recorded in the DICOM headers and the authors explain how to retrieve and interpret this information and use it to determine the scanning protocol that has been used. This in turn can be used to estimate the effective dose and the authors present an Excel spreadsheet for this purpose.
